This report gives an overview of the current status of geothermal energy in the U.S. and the challenges the resource faces. One of the primary concerns with adding more intermittent energy resources like wind and solar is how it will affect the grid’s resiliency. Geothermal energy is a baseload renewable energy resource with flexible and load-following capabilities that could solve these reliability concerns. Geothermal energy advocates claim that the energy source could also provide revenue for federal, state, and local stakeholders and potentially provide royalties for leaseholders. However, the U.S. geothermal energy industry faces considerable technical and non-technical challenges to widespread deployment.
