This report gives an overview of the current status of hydrogen production in the U.S. and the challenges the resource faces. President Biden has set a target of reaching a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. However, getting to net-zero emissions economy-wide presents a significant challenge. Industrial processes used in the production of products like steel, cement, glass, and chemicals all require high-temperature heat. This heat is currently produced by burning fossil fuels. For these hard-to-decarbonize industries, a hydrogen economy could be the solution. Hydrogen today is a small industry and must overcome many hurdles, but the industry is also full of potential applications.
